Windows indexes files and contents that allows you to search for a file in the windows search. For example, you can search for a file in your music library and it will show up in the start menu as libraries are indexed by default. However, if you have a organized folder structure and don't usually search for files, you can disable indexing. Disabling indexing does reduce disk usage. Disabling indexing of file contents Open This PC Right click on a drive and go to Properties. Uncheck the "Allow files on this drive to have its contents indexed in addition to file properties". Removing locations from indexing Search for Indexing Options in the start menu and open it. Click on Modify in the Index Options Windows. Click on "Show all locations" Now uncheck the locations that you don't want to be indexed. I leave the Start menu folder to be indexed as all the program shortcuts are there.
