How to turn off Indexing in Windows 10

Windows indexes files and contents that allows you to search for a file in the windows search. For example, you can search for a file in your music library and it will show up in the start menu as libraries are indexed by default.

However, if you have a organized folder structure and don't usually search for files, you can disable indexing. Disabling indexing does reduce disk usage.

Disabling indexing of file contents
  • Open This PC
  • Right click on a drive and go to Properties.
  • Uncheck the "Allow files on this drive to have its contents indexed in addition to file properties".

Removing locations from indexing
  • Search for Indexing Options in the start menu and open it.
  • Click on Modify in the Index Options Windows.
  • Click on "Show all locations"
  • Now uncheck the locations that you don't want to be indexed.
  • I leave the Start menu folder to be indexed as all the program shortcuts are there.
